Britain's Busiest Retail Destination Had a Charging Problem

Bullring & Grand Central is one of Britain's largest and most visited shopping destinations. Covering 200,000 m² across four floors, with 140 retail outlets and 39 million shoppers passing through its doors each year, the centre sets a high bar for the visitor experience in every dimension.

With contactless payment now standard and shoppers navigating, photographing, and sharing their experiences on mobile, phone power had quietly become infrastructure — as essential as Wi-Fi or car parking. The shift to mobile wallets made this more acute: a dead phone didn't just inconvenience shoppers, it stopped transactions.

Bullring's team recognised the problem and set out to find a solution that matched the scale and standard of the centre. They needed something shoppers could access quickly and easily, that wouldn't create congestion or require staff involvement, and that felt like a genuine retail amenity rather than an afterthought.

The Challenge

Shoppers Leave When Their Phone Dies — and It Never Shows Up in Exit Surveys

The most common reason a modern shopping trip ends early isn't price or product selection — it's a dead battery. When a shopper's phone runs out, they can't navigate the centre, pay contactless at the till, or share their experience on social media. They leave.
The problem is compounding. The rise of the mobile wallet means dead phone = no spending, not just no sharing. Fixed wall sockets were the standard answer — but they tether visitors in place, create congestion around a handful of points, and deliver nothing that resembles a premium retail experience.

No Power = No Stay

Shoppers who can't navigate, pay, or share leave early. The dwell-time loss is real — and silent.

Fixed Sockets Fall Short

Wall sockets tether visitors in place. They're a stop-gap for a 1990s problem in a 2020s retail environment.

Invisible in the Data

Dead-battery departures rarely appear in exit surveys. The dwell-time damage accumulates quietly across millions of visits.

The Solution

Portable Phone Charging for Shopping Centres: How Joos Works

In December 2020, Bullring & Grand Central deployed six Joos Box charging stations across the centre, making 488 portable power banks available to shoppers. The model was simple: pick up a charger at any Joos station, keep shopping and dining with your phone charging in your pocket, and return the power bank to any station when done.

No cables stretching across corridors. No visitors tethered to a wall point. No staff involvement. Replenishment, maintenance, and customer billing are all managed by Joos — the centre's team had nothing to do after the day of installation. There is no cost to the centre: no upfront investment, no running costs, and the deployment generates tens of thousands of pounds in income for the operator.

The Locker Test: When Customers Choose to Pay

Bullring didn't switch to Joos on faith. Prior to deploying Joos, the centre — and Hammerson's wider portfolio — had already invested in a solution: complimentary mobile phone charging lockers. Shoppers could leave their phone in a locker, free of charge, and collect it later.

Joos was piloted alongside those lockers. The results were unambiguous. Shoppers were actively choosing to pay to rent a Joos portable power bank rather than use the free locker. The reason was simple: portability. They didn't want to leave their phone behind — they wanted it with them while they shopped, paid, navigated, and shared. A locker solves the battery problem by removing the phone from the experience. Joos solves it without removing anything.

That insight — customers voluntarily paying for the better experience — was the data point that drove Hammerson's decision to retire the lockers and roll Joos across its entire portfolio.

The placement strategy reinforced the uptake. Joos worked with the Bullring team to identify high-traffic locations — entrances, food courts, transition zones — where shoppers would encounter a station naturally, without any promotion required.

From Pilot to Portfolio: When Customers Choose to Pay for the Better Product

The proof behind Hammerson's portfolio-wide decision isn't simply a usage figure — it's a behavioural one. Bullring piloted Joos alongside its existing complimentary charging lockers. When given a free option and a paid portable option side by side, shoppers consistently chose Joos. They paid to keep their phone with them rather than leave it locked away. That is as clean a product validation as any operator could ask for. Since launch, the deployment has generated over 40,000 orders. Joos costs the centre nothing to operate — no upfront investment, no running costs — and has generated tens of thousands of pounds in income. In February 2023, Hammerson retired its locker infrastructure and rolled Joos across its entire UK portfolio.
